One-way vs. Two-way Communication

Reflection Question:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of predominantly one-way communication (mass media) vs. two-way communication (face-to-face)?

  1. I think the purpose of our little experiment was to see the difference between two-way and one-way communication. When I did the drawing the first time, it was hard because I couldn’t ask questions and all I could do was follow directions to the best of my ability. The second time, it was much easier because I could interact and it was easier to understand directions. With media, when there’s one way communication like TV, sometimes it’s harder to understand the message and people interpret things differently so some people might get the wrong idea or impression. Two-way communication allows you to ask questions and have a better understanding. When I did the drawing the second time, it was much easier to do what she was telling me to do. With two-way communication in media, it’s easier to understand what they want you to understand.

  2. After conducting today’s experiment, I have concluded that two-way communication is a better way for people to interact with each other and much easier to accomplish a task. Two-way communication allows the receiver of the message reply or question on something they did not understand, similar to during the experiment when the drawer could ask question about parts of the description they did not understand to receiver better explanation. On the other hand, one-way communication only allows only the sender to send any information but the audience could not respond back, similar to how the drawer first could not ask questions about the instructions given. One-way communication gives advantages to commercial makers because they would not want the audience to question about the product. If commercial makers were to use a two-way communication method to send out their commercial, then the audience would ask questions and the commercial might not be as effective. Two-way communication is better for everyday consumers so that they could question the media, and not easily tricked into believing everything the media say. They could use the advantage they have to understand the media more thoroughly.

  3. There’re many advantages and disadvantages to one and two way communications. But it’s just the matter of who is at an advantage or disadvantage. In a one way communication, the sender is conveying a message to receivers without expecting the receivers to ask questions about it. This takes the receivers in a disadvantage because the audiences often believe that there’re no further depth to the message senders give. Sometimes the receivers might even understand the message differently. However, in a two way communications, receivers can ask questions about the message. This way the message is more clear to the receivers and they won’t mistake the message senders try to give.

  4. When we where conducting the experiment in class the first time i couldn’t get the picture correctly because i couldn’t communicate with my partner ( one- way communication). The second time i got the picture exactly because i got to ask questions and my partner explained the picture the way i could understand(two-way communication). The advantages of one way communication is that people can get there idea/ opinion through to the audience without interruptions. The disadvantages of one way communication is that people cant hear other peoples opinions or have any discussion. The advantages of two way communication is that people can have discussion.

  5. The advantages of one-way communications are that the sender has no problem; they can carry on with their work and don’t have to worry about anything. They don’t have to bother about what people think about their medium and they can do anything as they wish. The disadvantages are if the receiver does not understand or does not like it and has been offended by it, the senders tend to lose money and many people don’t usually buy their product or commercial, which is not good for the senders or the receivers because neither of them get what they want.

The advantages of two-way communications are that the senders and the receivers get to discuss what they would like. For example if more than a few people comment to the Pepsi director that their commercial was not good, the director will have a chance to listen to their ideas and make a new commercial, that way the audience and the director will get what they want (for example the audience gets good commercials and Pepsi while the director gets money. The disadvantages are the sender gets bothered and has to always focus on what the receivers want more than what they want. Most times this is a bother to most senders because every one has a different opinion about things and the sender has to make something that majority of the people will enjoy.

  6. I think that from our experiment we can conclude that two-way communication has a much better result than one way communication. For the people that missed the experiment, this is what we did.
We were asked to sit in pairs; one facing the white board and one behind, so the person couldn’t see the board. The one that could see the board was instructed to describe a picture (to their partner) Ms.Townshend drew. We repeated this experiment twice and the catch was that the first time we would follow the instructions (no questions asked). It was quick and time saving. The next time we were allowed to ask questions. In this form of communication I really understood. This time around, it took awhile longer than I expected but it was worth it. Definitely this was an advantage because I got to clear my doubts from before and it was easier for me to draw. Finally we looked at the difference. It was shocking!!!
After comparing the results, the class unanimously voted that when you are allowed to ask questions and increase your understanding, the picture is more accurate.
So you can see in both that there are advantages and disadvantages to both. Usually, a downfall to one-way communication would benefit two-way communication.
But for this experiment, I conclude that two way communications is more effective than just one-way.

  7. Oh, Ms Townshend.
I keep on forgetting to tell you something that i just remembered.
It is called “the story of stuff” and it would really be great for media literacy.
    Just search it.
    I hope you enjoy it!

  8. As discussed in class, there can be many advantages and disadvantages for both the sender and/or receiver of any mass media.

From the activity we did in class, I got to see one way and two way communication from the senders perspective. I must say, one way communication makes life easy. When I was communicating one way with my partner, my partner had to do as I said, or not. Whatever they did, no questions were to be asked which allowed me more freedom and less service time. I guess that’s how companies feel for one way communication, they don’t have to stress about helping worried customers. As stated in class this afternoon, ‘the sender doesn’t have to manage peoples opinions’. The big disadvantage however is if the receiver cannot state their voice or opinion, and if they find the media text that the sender sent offensive or horrid, the sender will not be informed which will allow their business to go downhill.
As for the sender, the disadvantage for one way communication would be that they cannot state their opinion and how the media text has affected them. If there’s absolutely no way for two way communication, the media text will continue to bother them.
For two way communication, the disadvantage for the sender is that someone can easily state their mind and possibly even put the creators of the media text into trouble if something they published was offensive or disrespectful. Also, they have to then realize that people can contact them so they have to be more careful with what they publish. The advantage for the sender is that they get to know how the receivers of their mass media are affected and how they see the text in their perspectives.
For the receiver, the advantage is they can respond to the sender and ask questions or talk about concerns over with the sender. In only some cases, the disadvantage would be that responding to the message would be time consuming.

  9. The advantages of one-way communication for the sender is that they are allowed to decide what information goes into the advertisement and what information to omit. So a company that is advertising a product can leave out all the bad parts about their product and only put in the good parts. Another advantage of one-way communication for the sender is that they won’t have to worry about the opnions of the viewers. An advantage of one-way communication for the receiver is that they can just walk away from it. One-way communication like advertisements on the phone can be easily ignored by just hanging up the phone, but if it was two-way communication, you woudn’t want to seem rude so you stay on the phone longer.

  10. Once I compared the drawings for sure I knew that the 2 way communication was much easier. The advantage for the 1 one way communications was for the sender because the sender didn’t have to explain in much detail. The disadvantage for the 1 way communication would be for the receiver because if anything wasn’t clear the receiver cannot ask questions. The 2 way communication was much easier because I was allowed to ask Abdul questions when we were testing between the 1 way and 2 way communication, which made it easier for me to understand which would be an advantage. I don’t think that there would be any disadvantages.

  11. (Accidently pressed the “submit comment” button when I wasn’t finished so here is the rest of it)

The disadvantages of one-way communication for the sender is that people might not always notice the advertisement so they would be wasting money for no reason. I have seen some bad advertisements before, but that is when I look through magazines the second time. The company doesn’t make the advertisment appealing enough for me to notice the first time. Another disadvantage is that sometimes people won’t always know what your advertising. In this case people won’t be encouraged to buy the product. For examples some beer advertisments on magazines have pictures of wild life which might make some think that they are advertising a trip instead of beer.

  12. Compare the drawings and reflect on the results of this experiment-one way communication did worse than two-way communication because, the person might be saying it to fast or the person who is receiving the information will not understand. Two-way communication might be clearer because the receiver can communicate with the person and verify anything that does not make sense. Both are not perfect because the receiver does not know the exact picture. One simple error can make a mistake like if you told a person to draw a rectangle, in can be big or little, horizontal or vertical.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of predominately one way communication (mass media) versus two way communication (face-to-face)? –the disadvantage of one-way communication does not give the receiver not much information. When a high school phones that a student missed a period the recording does not say the time or period. The advantage of one-way communication is that the person can not communicate with the receiver, which means that for television advertisement you can not quite hear what they say. For example at a low tone they might say some assembly may be required or batteries are included at the end of the advertisement. If you buy the object and you need other things to build it your monies wasted.

The advantages of two-way communication are that the receiver has all the details he needs and can ask questions if he does not understand. The disadvantages of two-way communication is that the customer might not want what the person is selling, because of the information they received for example for example lawn mower or soil advertisements that help grass grow, but it might have side effects like attract bugs.

  13. From the activity we did in class, I could see that there are many advantages and disadvantages to both ways of communicating. Advantages for one-way communication is that the sender doesn’t have to worry if people don’t understand it, because the receiver can’t communicate back to them. Another advantage is that it is way faster. From the activity we did in class, I, (the receiver) just drew whatever the sender told me to draw, and it turned out to be all wrong. A disadvantage of one-way communication is that you don’t get a clear message of what the sender is trying to say. Your point of view of the message might not be what the sender is actually trying to say.

An advantage of two way communication is that you can actually communicate with the sender. You can ask questions, and be clear of what the sender is trying to say. A disadvantage of two way communication is that if a company wants to sell something, and they put their email or phone number on the ad, it would be kinda be inconvenient for people who work in the company, because they would get emails or phone calls everyday asking questions about the product. It would also be kinda slow for the receiver to get all the information, because from the activity, I had a lot of questions, and it kinda took a really long time for me to ask all those questions.

  14. As discussed in class there are many advantages and disadvantages of both one and two-way communications.
The advantages of a one-way communication is that the sender can waste less time and advertise more things because the sender does not need to stress or manage other peoples opinions. The sender can also decide what to include and exclude in their advertisement. A advantage for the receiver is that they can choose to ignore or not buy the product. This is a disadvantage for the sender because their business will go down the drain. If the receiver doesn’t like what is being offered or advertised, then they will not buy the product, this is also bad for the senders because they will tend to lose money, viewers, or product buyers. A disadvantage for the receiver is that there is no freedom of expression.
The advantages of a two-way communication is that the receiver and sender get to decide what they would like. The receiver can also ask questions and give feedback to the sender. Another advantage is that the sender can get good opinions from the receivers and this can help them improve their product. A disadvantage is that the receiver may receive unexpected information which may change their mind of the product and this will also effect the sender because the product will not sell.

  15. After comparing the number of advantages and disadvantages for one-way communication and two-way communication, one-way seemed to benefit the sender more whereas two-way seemed to be better for the receiver.

One-way communication allows the sender to control and adjust what goes into the media text until it portrays an often bias message. This may be an advantage to the sender but it is definitely a disadvantage to the receiver because they often don’t see the whole truth about everything, even leading to social problems like low self-esteems. Also, one-way communication does not allow the receiver to question the sender or even the media text itself, an advantage to the sender because they don’t need to listen to the receiver’s opinions and criticism but this could also be a disadvantage because the sender might lose out on the constructive criticism to help them improve or convey their message clearer. The only advantage the receiver might have is that by not being able to (or maybe not wanting to) question things, they get a retreat from reality like most of us with reality shows. So overall, one-way media seems to save the sender a lot of trouble but does the opposite for the receiver.

Two-way communication is the exact opposite to one-way communication. The receiver can ask questions and can get the whole truth which is the most important advantage of face to face communication. It might be more troublesome for the sender but everyone benefits from having more communication. There’s less confusion and that decreases the problems. As for the disadvantages, you never know if there could still be some things hidden in two-way communications so you can’t trust things entirely. Plus, with everything and everybody out in the open, usually the sugar coating is gone and it’s back to reality.

  16. Compare the drawings and reflect on the results of this experiment

For the one-way drawing, my partner had to be very descriptive, because I couldn’t talk back to her, so it was harder when I forgot what she said and couldn’t ask her. Then I would have to guess. However, the two-way drawing was a lot easier because i could ask questions and she could reply back.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of predominantly one-way communication v.s. two way communication?

The advantages of a one-way communication, for example on the phone when there’s a machine that talks, it talks at a slow pace, very clearly, and more descriptive. The disadvantage is that you don’t get a chance to talk back and they won’t reply. Once you miss something the machine on the phone won’t repeat it again.
The advantage of two-way communication is that you can say something back and they will reply back to you. The disadvantage of two-way communication, for example on the phone, people may talk very quietly that you can’t hear anything they’re saying. Or for the sender that’s trying to sell something, the receiver can keep questioning them about the product, and some bad information about the product that you’re trying to sell, might slip out, that you weren’t suppose to mention to the audience. You would have to reveal more information to the receiver so it would be a disadvantage for the sender that’s trying to sell something.

  17. The advantages of one-way communication are it is a cheaper and quicker way of getting their message out to people (e.g. flyers) than two-way communication (e.g. phone calls). If someone wanted to travel to, lets says Cuba, it is much easier to read a brochure than calling a travel company, and asking them things about Cuba. One-way communication is designed to simple so the receiver can understand. The sender can decide what they want to put in, and leave what they want to put out. They also don’t have any comments whether they are negative or positive.

The disadvantages of one-way communication are that the receiver might not understand the message, thus resulting in waste of time and money on the part of the sender. The receiver also can’t communicate any ideas, concerns or questions. The sender might not even be able to say what they want to say because of the cost. With two-way communication on the other hand, the receiver can communicate what they want to say, thus giving the receiver a better understanding. Say the sender is a salesman and is trying to sell windows. By talking face-to-face, (two-way communication), the sender has a better chance in selling windows because; the receiver can express their questions or concerns.

  18. Between the two, clearly one-way communication has the better end of the bargain, on the sender’s part.

As we discussed in class, we concluded that the sender gets to choose what is omitted in the message which can affect the outcome of the receiver’s perspective of the message. Along with one of the many things we discussed in class, each receiver sees things differently but the sender is–for the most part– trying to get each receiver to see the same thing. Or in other words, get the message across in one way. Some disadvantages is that there is no feedback invovlved. The receiver has no say or any extra info. The receiver is given information and is make what he/she can of what he/she is given. Take in that message in their own way.

The advantages of one-way commnication is that the receiver gets the better deal. Only because the receiver can agree or disagree with the sender’s message and can voice a true opinion that can change the view of other receivers. This would be a disadvantage to the sender because they could become exposed.

  19. The Experiment we did in class I was the reciever and Rebeca was the sender. It was better when the second time I got to ask questions because its was diffcult when we couldnt ask question. I found that its better to do 2-way because you can talk to the person and when you watch Tv shows, and you want to respond to the show you cant really respond because its one-way. One-way is when you cant respond to whatever your looking at or watching sometimes you can respond by one-way if you are reading a book or something because you can mail the author. I found two-way better.

  20. The purpose of this experiment was that 2 way communication is better than one way because in 2 way you get to ask questions and you get to understand it better. In the one way communication you dont get to get the clear message but in two way you get alot of details and could get the picture that someone is discribing to you in your head.

  21. After doing the experiment I realized many more things about the different types of communications. The first time I drew my picture I just tried to listen to my partner the best I possibly could It was hard just doing what he said becuase at times I wasnt sure what to draw due the description he exclaimed. When the one way communication exercise was finished we moved on to 2 way , it was much more beneficial to the receiver since I was aloud to ask questions and even make sure if he was explaining the right thing. 2 way communication might be good for the receiver but can disadvantage the sender because the receiver has more options in front of him/her at there hands with the power of questioning and making sure everythings accurate.

  22. There are many advantages to both one way and two way communication. However, we have to look at who is actually benefiting from either one way or two way communication.
One way communication is very beneficial for the person whom is sending the message, but not to the person who is receiving the message on the other side. One way communication is used to send a very strong message to people. Many advertisers use one way communication to send a strong message that can not be questioned. The purpose of one way communication is to send a message without the reciever having the option to question and think otherwise of what is said. This leaves no other options to`consider, no opposing beliefs that may counter the sent message. Many large corporations use one way communication such as posters, magasin ads, T.V, or even billboards. Such companies send viewers a stong message that contains no counter arguments. Important deatils are left out, and only the ones that help argue the sender’s opinion are left in. It is very biased and only shows one side of the “story”. There is no opportunity for the viewer to ask questions. They can only take what is spoon fed to them through the ads.

Two way communication is a lot different. Both sides can express their oppinions, messages, or beliefs. It is much more beneficial for the reciever because the messages and beliefs are not spoon fed to them. They can question the message and choose to believe otherwise. The recievers are able to recieve the whole message and not just the part the senders want you to see and believe. The experiment done in class for example showed how two way communication benefited the reciever much more. The receiver was able to see the whole picture. When they are able to ask questions, the complete message is reveiled and nothing is hidden. Now the viewer has many more beliefs, options and opinions to explore. They see the good and the bad. It is harder for the sender to try to get the message they want to send across to the viewer because now, the viewer can question and create an unbiased message that they want to believe. The sender will have to try harder and make a more convincing message. The sender must try harder to try and get the same message across when using two way communication as aposed to one way commucation.

  23. In this experiment the 2-way was much easyer than the 1-way communication. For 1-way communication , its better for the sender because they know what they want to send to the reciever. but it bad for the reciever it bad, because if they dont understand somethings they can’t ask any questions. In 2-way communication is better because your are having a discussion and you can ask question if you don’t get what the reciever is trying to tell you.

  24. (kinda forgot…)
One way commmunication and two way communication is an important part between people. The advantages of one way communication include allowing the sender the flexibility of choosing what they like to incorporate in an ad and what to omit. Even doing for your own benefit, the good part would be that the receiver has no clue of your action and it will be some kind of secret to them since they can’t ask questions (directly at least). In the meantime, it’s faster, but because of its lack of detail and accuracy regarding the topic and is impossible to make a discussion with, it can cause curiousity. This can become an advantage because the sender is able to keep the receiver interested in the product or ad and maintain the interest. The main disadvantage would be that they won’t get feedbacks to improve the ad somehow and the producer might not know whether they have caused misunderstandings and confusion which could lead to diputes. In two way communications, the topic would be more precise. The information is more reliable because you can ask questions and you’ll get an answer and explanation of the whole subject. This way, the receiver would get a better comprehension of the subject and get the chance to truly decide whether it is really what they want after knowing the background info about the subject (or product). In my opinion, two way communication is more crucial and beneficial to both the sender and receiver because the receiver would better understand what was being introduced to him and the sender could get useful feedbacks for improvements. Effective communication (two way) is vital if you want the receiver or reader to understand your viewpoint. In two way, it’s possible because you could use persuasion, while in one way, if the viewer doesnt accept the producer’s point of view, that’s it! The maker of the ad wouldn’t even know what went wrong in the first place!!! Two way communication is not always possible expecially if you wanted to get the invention of a product (ie. cars, computers, spaceships) from one country to another across the world. Therefore, this can be where one way communication comes in. It’s fast and simple, whereas two way can really be “time consuming”.

  25. One Way communication

When we were doing the project on comparing one way vs 2 way communication, I found as the sender 1 way communication was much easier. In 1 way communication telling the person what to draw without them asking question is much easier than them asking questions. Than after when I was in 2 way communication Aijith kept asking questions and it really got annoying. But when I became the receiver in one way communication it became very complicated because the sender wasn’t explaining how the shape looked properly. Comparing that to commercials I see how a receiver you can get sucked in into the products knowing all the pro’s of the product but not all the con’s.

    -Abdul rocks

  26. Bendix(2010) clarified that one way communication is best appropriate when managers do not have the time and resources needed to communicate effectively, this diverts us to a point of seeing that 1 way com is both time & resource oriented ignoring the quality of output generated. 2 way however is a bit accurate & leads to quality decisions being made.

  27. I think that one way communication is worse at time because you dont get clarifications to many things where as if it were two way communication you can clarify it by asking them those are my thoughts although i didnt do the experiment yet???

  28. In my opinion one-way and two-way communication both have their advantages and disadvantages. As a sender I think that one-way communication is better. The sender has more freedom and does not need to listen to anyone else’s opinion or answer any questions. They are flexible to say what they want no questions asked. It is easier for senders that use one-way communication make their product sell better because they can state all the pros and have no questions asked about the cons. In one-way communication the sender can omit some parts of the information to make the receiver interpret the message to the sender’s benefit (usually in advertisements or in politics).

On the other hand the receiver will not understand all the features about the product or information. It is easier to receive the message using two-way communication. Also the receiver will not be easily tricked into believing everything the media telling them is true. In the experiment two-way communication had the much better result.

In the experiment the sender was facing chart paper with an array of shapes drawn on to it and the receiver had his back against the chart paper so he/she couldn’t see it. When we were using one-way communication the sender described the shapes and the receiver drew them with no questions asked. When we tested two way communication the receiver could ask questions as the sender described the shapes. For the receiver the description became clearer and he understood the message better. the results were better too. I can conclude that in many case for the sender one-way communication is more beneficial but the opposite for the receiver. The receiver would benefit more if it was two-way communication.

  29. Ok I think that it is very clear that one way is worse than two way communication. This is because in one way communication the receiver doesn’t get information that would entirerly make sense to him/her and this can mess up a lot of situations and cause problems.
Two way communication is much more understandable. I have received dozens of e-mails that aren’t really helpful. For example: Once my video game broke down and I contacted the company through Gmail, but my reply was a bot mail (mail that is send by a cpu) and i couldn’t reply or ask anything about it.
Also one time I called the company instead because of my knowledge from previous experiments. This time a lady asked me questions and i could answer them and i can tell her the problems with the game.
So overall I think Two-Way communication is better and easier to communicate with

  30. i think that one way communication is not better because like i said in class
if a big incorperation it dose not have to be a inc but somthing sending a media text and maybe it can be somthing harmful or mean you cant do anything about nit and you cant communicat with anyone so tow is i thinkbetter.

  31. I have learn a few excellent stuff here. Certainly price bookmarking for revisiting. I surprise how much effort you set to create such a wonderful informative website.

  33. My opinion regarding, the merits & demerits of one-way and two-way communications largely depends on the context.
For example, most projects are time bound, thefore the use of a two-way communication would be a shear waste of time and a cost to the organisation, that’s the reason why expertise are deployed to deal with the field of their expertise. Hence, one way communication would be appropriate in this case. Also news casting is done within allocated time so as to accomodate other programs, hence the use of a two-way communication is inappropriate.
Regarding the two-way communication, it’s appropriate when dealing with say formulation of certain legislation thru the act of parliament. For example, zambia is currently undergoing the constitution making process which requires the opinion of the majority in order for the new constitution to be effective and stand a test of time.
